====== Sensors ====== ===== Skilled Level ===== Students demonstrate **basic understanding and safe use** of sensors. ● Identify common sensors by **type, symbol, and physical appearance**. ● Explain the **function and application** of each sensor (e.g., limit switch detects position, encoder measures rotation). ● Correctly wire sensors to the RoboRIO or other controllers (signal, power, ground). ● Demonstrate safe handling of sensors (avoid short circuits, protect sensitive components). ● Use a multimeter or basic software tools to **verify sensor connectivity and basic functionality**. ● Observe sensor outputs in a simple test program (e.g., read a limit switch state or encoder counts). ---- ===== Independent Level ===== Students can **integrate sensors into robot subsystems and troubleshoot issues**. ● Independently wire and configure a sensor to a subsystem (e.g., arm, drive, or intake). ● Calibrate sensors where applicable (e.g., gyro zeroing, encoder scaling). ● Read and interpret sensor data in software to **control a subsystem or feedback loop**. ● Diagnose sensor issues: disconnected wires, reversed polarity, faulty readings, or misalignment. ● Document sensor placement, wiring, and configuration for team reference. ● Mentor or assist another student in wiring, configuring, or troubleshooting a sensor. ---- ===== Leader Level ===== Students **lead sensor selection, integration, calibration, and troubleshooting** for the robot. ● Lead the design and placement of sensors for a subsystem or the whole robot. ● Supervise the installation, calibration, and verification of multiple sensors across the robot. ● Train and mentor team members on **sensor wiring, programming, calibration, and troubleshooting**. ● Develop and maintain **sensor documentation**, including wiring diagrams, configuration notes, and calibration procedures. ● Lead troubleshooting during build or competition for **sensor-related failures**, including CAN/analog/digital issues. ● Evaluate sensor performance and recommend **upgrades or optimizations** for robot efficiency and reliability. ● Integrate sensor data with software and robot systems for **autonomous or precision functions**, demonstrating understanding of sensor fusion concepts. ● Identify and research new sensors for possible use in the upcoming season.
