Wiring

Skilled Level

Students demonstrate basic understanding and safe use of measurement tools.

  • Identify common meters and measurement tools (digital multimeter, clamp meter, voltage tester).
  • Understand basic electrical quantities: voltage, current, resistance, continuity.
  • Demonstrate safe handling of meters (proper leads, voltage rating, avoiding shorts).
  • Measure battery voltage and confirm polarity.
  • Measure simple circuit continuity.
  • Observe and interpret basic readings from meters.
  • Demonstrate correct use of measurement units (V, A, Ω).

Independent Level

Students can perform independent measurements, analysis, and troubleshooting.

  • Measure current draw of motors or subsystems using a multimeter or clamp meter.
  • Measure voltage drops across components and wiring.
  • Measure resistance and verify component values (resistors, fuses).
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues using measured values (open circuits, shorts, brownouts).
  • Pass the Black box measurement test
  • Select the correct meter range and settings for different tasks.
  • Mentor another student on proper meter use and safety.

Leader Level

Students lead measurement and diagnostic efforts for the team.

  • Supervise meter usage for troubleshooting and subsystem verification.
  • Develop team procedures or checklists for measurement of electrical systems.
  • Train team members on advanced measurement techniques (current profiling, voltage sag under load, continuity checks in complex wiring).
  • Lead pre-competition checks using meters to ensure all batteries, motors, and CAN devices are operating correctly.
  • Analyze measurement data to recommend component replacements or system optimizations.
  • Integrate measurements into team documentation for future troubleshooting and build planning.
  • Demonstrate use of advanced diagnostic tools, such as oscilloscopes, for complex signals (optional for expert-level students).
